If the land is well and the sea is well, the people will thrive
At Te Papa Atawhai, Department of Conservation we express our spirit of service and serve Aotearoa through our purpose, Papatūānuku Thrives. Our organisational strategy, Te Kaupapa a Te Papa Atawhai, puts nature and people at the heart of everything we do. It is anchored by te reo Māori and te ao Māori, recognising that Te Tiriti o Waitangi and our whānau, hapū and iwi are central to all our mahi.
He angitūtanga | About the role
The position is based on Takapourewa island where you'll partake in a variety of work. As the kaitiaki of the island your mahi will vary from maintenance of infrastructure, weed control, track clearing, minor plant propagation and managing visitors. This remote and isolated location has good accommodation, its own power system and satellite broadband.
The Department jointly manages the island with Ngāti Koata where you will have some direct contact with the iwi. An appreciation for the history of this relationship and previous experience working with iwi will be an advantage.
With this position being one of a kind, proven experience living in isolation is necessary. Due to the remote location of the island and nature of the work, this position would ideally suit a couple through a job share or accompanied position arrangement.
This position is fixed term of initially 18 months with the possibility of extension up to 36 months.
