At DOC, we are undergoing a refresh of the heritage and visitors strategy. A growing population, growing tourism industry, and increasing interest in getting into the outdoors means greater use of public lands and waters. Visitors are more diverse and interested in a wider range of experiences.


Managing a million new visitors well demands new approaches and techniques, to protect conservation values and to ensure that visitors have great experience. To this end, a new unit is being established; one dedicated to ensuring DOC manages our major visitor regions well over the long term.


This influential role reports to the Director Heritage and Visitors, and has the following key responsibilities:


  • Provide expert guidance to senior advisors: reviewing work; ensuring consistency; aligning with international best practice.
  • Translate the national visitor and heritage strategy into regionally focussed strategies that enhance the visitor experience while ensuring visitor safety is a priority.  
  • Work in partnership with the new unit, the wider DOC team, iwi, and natural resource sector stakeholders
  • Prioritise and programme manage competing requirements and regional demands.
  • Bring an innovative and informed approach, seeking to continuously improve our strategies in this area.


Your background will demonstrate:

  • Expert knowledge of our recreation and tourism sectors including visitor management within protected areas.
  • Experience in a senior or principal advisor position, or a similar position which requires strategic thinking, analysis and reporting skills as well as the ability to influence at the most senior levels.
  • A deep skillset in cross-functional approaches to working, with a proven ability to at once collaborate and deliver.
  • An understanding of Te Ao Māori values and knowledge, and experience partnering with iwi on complex issues.
  • A track record of delivery excellence, innovation and continuous improvement.
