We are looking for a Biodiversity Ranger join the Coastal Otago Operations team to both work with and lead others in delivering our critical natural heritage conservation work.

 

In this role you will have defined responsibilities in planning and organising work programmes to deliver a range of flora and fauna projects. Bringing a good understanding of pest management to the team you will provide advice to our key partners on conservation projects such as Predator Free Dunedin and War on Weeds. Those you will be working with include: community groups, volunteers, local rūnanga and Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, and other staff running biodiversity-based work programmes according to work plans.

 

The expertise of our C band Rangers, such as this one, is critical to the successful delivery of the work programmes of our District Operations team. Fully supported by the District management team, you will be able to focus on carrying out the right work, at the right time, in the right place. The work is broad and while good experience and skills in the field are required, equally there is a significant office component to this work. The responsibilities of this role are:

• weed and animal pest management
• ecosystem management and protection
• fauna and flora threatened species management such as rare plants, freshwater fish, New Zealand sea lions, hoiho, Northern Royal albatross
• habitat restoration and protection
• covenant monitoring and tenure review monitoring.

 

A strong team ethic is essential; the Coastal Otago District team is highly-collegial and this, together with strong interpersonal skills is required for success in working with others in delivering conservation work. Flexibility and the ability to prioritise well are critical as you will often work across various work programs with various people. Together with those skills already described, we are also looking for:

• a good knowledge of conservation and biodiversity management
• experience working with threatened species
• experience working on biodiversity threat management projects
• previous success leading community conservation projects and initiatives
• a strong health and safety focus in your work
• good communication skills and a proven ability to produce quality written reports and communications which are relevant and audience-appropriate
• experience of working with data
• a good level of fitness
• a full, valid driver licence.

 

Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory, including a valid work visa covering the entire employment period if applying internationally.
