As a Ranger, Community you will be part of a highly motivated team, working to connect and grow conservation through building and maintaining relationships with Iwi & Hapu, Community and Stakeholders.


You will be responsible for

  • Managing and building relationships with Iwi, Whanau & Hapu to support and enable kaitiakitanga across whenua managed by Te Papa Atawhai.
  • Managing relationships with the community that deliver value to conservation.
  • Leading the concessions/permissions portfolio for the district.
  • Leading the media and advocacy portfolio for the district.
  • Supporting DOC staff in managing conservation partnerships.
  • Promoting conservation, lifting awareness and educating others on the value of our natural heritage.
  • Leading the tourism engagement portfolio working in close partnership with Iwi partners, local and regional councils and tourism providers.



The ideal applicant will:

  • Have a tertiary qualification, or equivalent experience, in either project management OR working with community and iwi
  • Be passionate and knowledgeable about conservation
  • Have excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Be a strong networker, with positive working relationships across a broad range of public and private sector businesses and groups
  • Have knowledge and experience in planning and organising projects
  • An individual whom enjoys working as part of a team with the ability to work on own as and when required.


Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory, including a valid work visa covering the whole period of employment if applying internationally.
