We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced and highly motivated island biodiversity specialist with exceptional relationship skills and strong science background to lead the future management of New Zealand's Subantarctic Islands.

 

Our work in the Subantarctic Islands requires collaboration with an extensive range of stakeholders and partners to get results. Collaborative relationship skills will be a big part of this role.

 

This role is based in the Invercargill Office with the possibility of one trip per year to the Subantarctic Islands.

 

The role has a biodiversity focus but will also work other aspects of the Subantarctic Islands management.  

You will be responsible for:

  • Development of annual work programmes through the Department's business planning systems, thirdly performance reporting and financial management and reporting.
  • Contributing to the implementation of the Regional Coastal Plan, a new Research Strategy for the Subantarctic Islands, an Historic Sites Strategy for the Subantarctic Islands and the implementation of the Sealion Threat Management Plan.
  • Project managing development of a Subantarctic Islands Tourism Strategy.
  • Developing a compliance plan to ensure all vessels and visitors are complying with the relevant statutes e.g. Coastal Plan, Marine Reserves Act, Wildlife Act.
  • Providing technical advice regarding island biodiversity in the Subantarctic Islands.
  • Leadership of health and safety in the Subantarctic Islands.
  • Leadership of high quality island biosecurity in the Subantarctic Islands.

 

We are looking for someone who is a positive team player, innovative and open to change, has great judgement, is adaptable, a skilled multitasker and an excellent communicator with a high level of emotional intelligence.

 

The ideal applicant will have the following skills and experience:

  • 3 years or more island biodiversity experience is desirable. Particularly experience with penguins, marine mammals and seabirds.
  • Strong analytical skills and proven ability in report writing with an ability to meet deadlines is essential.
  • Excellent computer skills are essential.
  • A strong networker, with productive working relationships across a broad range of public and private sector businesses, agencies and groups.
  • Knowledge and experience in planning, logistics and organising remote island field work is desirable.
  • Full drivers licence is essential.
