The Rakiura/Stewart Island Office is looking for three capable and enthusiastic Rangers to support the delivery of the recovery project to protect the critically endangered southern New Zealand dotterel. These are fixed term positions from September 2017 until February 2018.

This position is ideal for those who enjoy working in remote backcountry locations for extended periods, undertaking a mixture of predator control, bird monitoring and small maintenance tasks.

You will be working as part of a team of 3 temporary rangers dedicated to the delivery of the dotterel recovery project, alongside other Rangers. You will work closely with a Ranger responsible for tasking your team on a day to day basis.

Your role will contribute to ensuring the on-going recovery of a Nationally Critical bird population.

Your role will include the following tasks:

• Ground-based toxic predator control and kill trapping
• Nest searching and nest-fate monitoring
• Recording colour band re-sightings
• Targeted shooting of predator species
• Recording field notes and reporting on work completed
• Minor hut maintenance tasks
• Maintenance of predator control tracks and infrastructure
• Field supervision of employees, volunteers and/or contractors as required
• Fire control or other conservation related emergency responses to meet the Department's obligations when required

The ideal applicant will have:

• A strong work ethic and enjoyment of field work in the backcountry
• A keen interest in practical biodiversity conservation
• The ability to work in remote locations and in adverse weather conditions for up to 10 days at a time
• Good verbal communication skills
• The ability to work well alone as well as part of a team
• A Controlled Substance Licence with endorsements for 1080 and PAPP would be desirable
• A NZ fire arms licence would be desirable
• A NZ full driver's licence
• A current First Aid certificate
