Are you someone who loves the outdoors, has lots of practical skills and enjoys working with people? If yes, then this is the job for you.

We are looking for a Ranger, Operations (Biodiversity) to be based at Haast Awarua

The focus of this position is saving our rarest kiwi species – the Haast tokoeka, but does include a variety of other biodiversity related work. We are looking for someone to join our team who is passionate about the conservation of New Zealand's natural flora and fauna, is highly motivated, very fit, has previous threatened species management experience, good all round technical skill - including telemetry, navigation and field skills, and more importantly, loves living in a remote and beautiful place.


As a Ranger you will be actively working across a range of different projects including:

 

  • kiwi recovery, primarily Haast tokoeka;
  • pest management;
  • threatened species management; including mohua, Fiordland crested penguin (tawaki), and marine mammals.

 

Your day to day work may take you across the district, and to other parts of the region, carrying out biodiversity work programmes on and off public conservation land.

 

The successful applicant will have:

 

  • the ability to work well in a small team  
  • proven back country experience, working/travelling alone off tracks in mountainous and forested terrain
  • experience in threatened species management
  • excellent computer, data management and reporting skills
  • a high level of physical fitness
  • able to overnight in the field when required
  • be keen and quick to learn
  • a current Class 1 driver's licence

 

Ideally the successful applicant will also have:

  • a current first aid certificate
  • boat master's qualifications
  • Animal handling/husbandry experience
