Can you get others enthusiastic and active in supporting conservation? Are you keen to do your bit to protect New Zealand and encourage others to see the value of conservation and get involved?


We are looking for an experienced and energetic person to help in the following key focus areas;


Taranaki District Engagement Plan

  • The Taranaki Mounga Project has presented us with a great opportunity to better engage with partners, business and the community.
  • This role will focus on the delivery of a community and stakeholder engagement plan for the Taranaki District.
  • The work will include Taranaki Mounga Project’s 5 core objectives including associated initiatives stemming from Oranga Mounga, Oranga Tangata (including Healthy Nature, Healthy People).
  • This position will also be responsible for integrating our current education/outreach programme and growing engagement with key community groups and other stakeholders.


Treaty Settlement implementation plan

  • Assist with the delivery of the Treaty Implementation Plan including building local staff knowledge and capability around treaty implementation and fostering a culture of understanding and commitment to our obligations.
  • Help to enable Whanau, Hapu and Iwi participation in the work we do.


Education and advocacy

  • Align the outreach and education programme with Taranaki District goals, objectives and strategies through leadership and facilitation.
  • Build and maintain partnerships that promote conservation, lift awareness and educate others on the value of conservation.
  • Continue to grow participation in conservation through the volunteer programme.


You will be based in New Plymouth and work as part of a dynamic operations team focused on protecting Taranaki’s special Conservation values and growing the number of New Zealanders who are actively involved with and contributing to conservation.


To be successful in this position, you will have:

  • Excellent relationship building skills and a proven ability to work with diverse stakeholders
  • A good knowledge of social marketing, community outreach and/or education models, tools and practices
  • Excellent communication skills and an ability to transfer knowledge and enthusiasm to others
  • Understanding of the Departments Treaty obligations under Section 4 of the Conservation Act.
  • The ability to identify and develop new opportunities and collaborate with others to participate in conservation.


This is an exciting position with development opportunities. This is a permanent position for the successful candidate but there may also be an opportunity for this position to be seconded for a fixed period to an external organisation.
