We're seeking an exceptional Operations Manager to join to lead our dynamic team in Whakatane, playing a pivotal role in delivering conservation excellence across our diverse landscapes whilst supporting partnerships throughout the region. You will be well networked and comfortable working with stakeholders throughout our region.
You will spearhead managing and enhancing conservation outcomes in the Eastern Bay of Plenty region. Reporting to the Regional Director, Eastern North Island, you will lead a team responsible for driving outcomes for conservation and Te Ao Turoa inclusive of Te Tiriti outcomes. Our work programmes are diverse, fast-paced and complex, so your ability to nurture team wellbeing and culture through strong engagement, guidance and development is critical. Anchored by te ao Māori, you'll recognise that Te Tiriti o Waitangi and partnerships with whānau, hapū and iwi are central to our mahi.
The position will be focussed on:
- Operations Management: Oversee strategic and operational demands, working in close partnership with delivery teams and leaders across DOC, providing strategic leadership to biodiversity, recreation/historic and community engagement conservation work delivered on the ground
- Team Leadership: Inspire and develop a high-performing team, fostering a culture of safety, continuous improvement, and inclusivity
- Treaty Partnerships: Establish and continuously strengthen partnerships with community, whānau, hapū, iwi and mana whenua, honouring what it means to be an effective Treaty partner
- Relationship Management: Foster strong stakeholder relationships and maintain engagement, ensuring respectful collaboration and honouring Treaty commitments with commercial, community and government entities
- Delivery and Improvement: Lead the team in delivering high-quality conservation outputs and spearhead growth initiatives
- Health and Safety: Create a strong safety-first environment with consistent safety practice across all work sites for staff and visitors

We are looking for an inspiring people leader with exceptional people and relationship management skills, comfortable working across landscapes with multiple Tiriti Partners and a willingness to work and enable change from a Crown – Māori perspective in your behaviours as a leader.
If you have the following we are keen to hear from you:
- Strong core people leadership and commitment to developing your team
- Proven operational leadership experience in a large and complex organisation (environmental/resource management desirable)
- Experienced in stakeholder and community partnership with the ability to effectively engage and partner with mana whenua, iwi, hapū and whānau, Councils and Government agencies
- Strong planning and delivery management, experienced leading projects within a fast paced environment
- Experienced in pragmatic critical thinking, able to wort at pace and manage multiple complexities
- Resilience to navigate through times of pressure, challenge, or ambiguity
- Strong political astuteness, with the ability to identify and provide strategies to manage risk or identify solutions to complex or uncertain situations

The salary range for this position is $113,712 - $161,659
