He angitūtanga | About the role 

Te Manahuna Biodiversity team is looking for a fit and enthusiastic team member to join the biodiversity team based in the Twizel office. This is an exciting opportunity for the right individual to build on their skillset and be part of a professional team achieving high quality conservation outcomes.

Your role will involve undertaking tasks associated with Kakī /Black Stilt Recovery Programme. The role will focus on locating wild pairs across the Mackenzie Basin, reading and confirming leg bands and interpreting bird behaviour. You will be part of a small team, responsible for the collection of eggs from wild pairs and delivering them to our Captive Facility near Twizel.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • locating wild pairs and watching for nesting behaviour,
  • locate nests and identify individual leg bands of the pairs,
  • collect eggs and deliver to the Kaki Captive Facility,
  • communicate daily observations to the team leader.


The successful applicant should:

  • have full NZ driver's license (mandatory),
  • have good wildlife observation and behavioural interpretation skills,
  • have excellent record keeping of field data,
  • be able to follow instructions from team leader,
  • have excellent communication skills,
  • be a quick learner,
  • have river crossing skills (experience strongly preferred),
  • have a high level of fitness (mandatory – have to be able to carry 10-15kg for 15-20km on uneven terrain and must be able to handle having wet feet all day every day),
  • have bird band reading skills using scope and binoculars,
  • be able to start work at 7am (mandatory) and be flexible with working longer days.


This is a 14 week fixed term position starting on 19 September 2022.
