The Commercial and Pricing Strategy Unit was established as a separate unit in 2019 to drive a greater contribution from those who use the assets to re-invest in conservation. We've made at great start, but there is still work to do. We are looking for a Recreation Pricing and Commercial Strategy Manager at an exciting time of growth to lead a team of four permanent direct reports, plus a summer intern.

The focus of your team will be to deliver a holistic approach to pricing the Department of Conservation Visitor and Recreation assets to ensure we both optimise occupancy and revenue generation for the benefit of conservation.  This will require you to understand audience needs, build strong internal and external relationships, integrate, and refine business systems and processes, as well as deliver high quality pricing reviews.  To succeed in the role, you will need to understand the inter-relationship of product, price and promotion to ensure revenue optimisation alongside other outcomes, for example visitor demand management and supporting access to the outdoors for New Zealanders.  


He angitūtanga: About the Role

As the Recreation Pricing and Commercial Strategy Manager, you will provide expertise to key stakeholders regarding the use of pricing methodology in the visitor recreation system. You will ensure that the pricing of visitor experiences is appropriate and up to date in terms of fees, revenue, and costs.  You will be skilled in using pricing mechanisms to support visitor demand management, and in championing systems that will support customer needs.  Your expertise will also be called upon to support the preparation of investment business cases and cost benefit analysis for our recreation amenities through an understanding of the headroom for growth.

This appointment requires an innovative and inspiring leader who can demonstrate significant experience and capability in revenue optimisation and demand management. You will enjoy coaching, motivating, and setting clear direction for your team to reach their full potential. You will build excellent internal stakeholder networks, be confident working with a range of external stakeholders including the media and able to balance competing objectives in a customer focused environment.

Specific skills:

  • An ability to think strategically and at the systems level, establish frameworks, exert influence, provide clarity, and implement change
  • A tertiary qualification in tourism, business, or commerce
  • Proven experience in the development and implementation of pricing methodologies and optimisation of revenue, preferably in the tourism sector
  • An understanding of public policy, business analytics, tourism development or conservation management would be an advantage
