Location is to be discussed, there are a variety of options through New Zealand where this role can be performed: Whangārei, Auckland, Hamilton, Taupō, Palmerston North or Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch or Hokitika, Invercargill

 

At DOC, we are undergoing a refresh of the heritage and visitors strategy. A growing population, growing tourism industry, and increasing interest in getting into the outdoors means greater use of public lands and waters. Visitors are more diverse and interested in a wider range of experiences. Managing a million new visitors well demands new approaches and techniques, to protect conservation values and to ensure that visitors have great experience. To this end, a new unit is being established; one dedicated to ensuring DOC manages our major visitor regions well over the long term.

 

This role reports to the Director Heritage and Visitors, and has the following key responsibilities: 

  • Support two-way information sharing between operations and strategy and long-term planning and design functions.
  • Support the implementation of policy changes or introduction of new products into the regions
  • Provide feedback on implementation particularly from the regional operations teams through to national office.
  • Support the alignment of regional plans to long term plans and national policy and products
  • Lead a team of 9 senior visitor advisors located across New Zealand.
  • Support desired safety outcomes for the visitor system
  • Work in partnership with the new unit, the wider DOC team, iwi, the tourist and heritage sectors and the wider natural resources sector.

 

Your background will demonstrate:

  • An understanding of recreation and tourism sectors.
  • Experience in bringing the ‘customer voice' into both strategy and operations.
  • Experience in a senior position which requires people leadership, strategic thinking and the ability to influence at the most senior levels.
  • Confidence in cross-functional approaches to working, with a proven ability to at once collaborate and deliver.
  • Leading through influence and navigating the path between strategy and implementation.
  • An understanding of Te Ao Māori values and knowledge, and experience partnering with iwi on complex issues.
  • A track record of innovation and bringing evidence-based practice into pragmatic solutions.

 

The role is fulltime and your staff are spread across the country, so travel will be required.
