At DOC, we are undergoing a refresh of the heritage and visitors strategy. A growing population, expanding tourism industry, and increasing interest in getting into the outdoors means greater use of public lands and waters. Visitors are more diverse and interested in a wider range of experiences. Managing a million new visitors well demands new approaches and techniques, to protect conservation values and to ensure that visitors have great experience. To this end, a new unit is being established; one dedicated to our systems and investment strategy for recreation, tourism and historic heritage.


This role reports to the Director Heritage and Visitors, and has the following key responsibilities: 

  • Bring strategy development and insights together to realise an evidence-based, strategy led approach.  
  • Develop a plan to gather customer insights and identify trends and performance indicators.
  • Lead an expert team of around 9 specialist advisors, who will provide evidence-based decision support for the organisation.
  • Work in partnership with the new unit, the wider DOC team, iwi, and external stakeholders
  • Prioritise and programme manage insights work to drive performance improvement.  
  • Bring an innovative and informed approach, seeking to continuously improve our strategies in this area.


Your background will demonstrate:

  • Expertise in customer insights and analytics, applying these in a meaningful way that changes the outcome.
  • Experience in a senior position which requires people leadership, strategic thinking and the ability to influence at the most senior levels.
  • Confidence in cross-functional approaches to working, with a proven ability to at once collaborate and deliver.
  • An understanding of Te Ao Māori values and knowledge, and experience partnering with iwi on complex issues.
  • A track record of innovation and turning evidence-based strategy and research into pragmatic solutions.


Location: Wellington


The role is fulltime or may done at 80% FTE. While it is Wellington based your staff are spread across Christchurch and Wellington, so occasional travel will be required.
