The Department of Conservation has a significant and renewed policy work programme to ensure the vision for New Zealand to be the greatest living space on Earth. We are responsible for some of the most important issues facing New Zealand: how to look after our unique environment in a way that benefits current and future generations. The Department grapples with issues as challenging as maintaining our unique biodiversity, whilst responding to the increasing number of visitors spending time in our beautiful places.

Our unique environment is at the heart of New Zealand's success; and conservation policy is increasingly the place where environmental, social and economic issues come together. The Policy Division advises on the full range of issues the Department faces; is at the front line of its relationship with Ministers and other agencies; and is at the forefront of thinking on its big challenges.

We are looking for smart and ambitious policy advisors with a passion for providing high quality advice to join our policy unit. You will have Government policy experience but knowledge of conservation-specific issues is not a prerequisite.

Successful candidates will have strong analytical and critical thinking capability, excellent written and verbal communication coupled with a strong capacity to quickly learn new subject matter and a drive for high performance.

As part of a growing and pivotal team, your ability to work with and through others, both in and out of the Department, will be critical. As will your ability to think through policy problems clearly and impartially, and to communicate your advice in an accessible and compelling way.

The Department is committed to equal opportunities for all New Zealanders and promotes diversity in the work force
