We are looking for smart and ambitious policy and senior policy advisors with a passion for providing high quality advice to join our policy unit. You will have Government policy experience but knowledge of conservation-specific issues is not a prerequisite.

Successful candidates will have strong analytical and critical thinking capability, excellent written and verbal communication coupled with a strong capacity to quickly and learn new subject matter.

As part of a growing and pivotal team, your ability to work with and through others, both in and out of the Department, will be critical. As will your ability to think through policy problems clearly and impartially, and to communicate your advice in an accessible and compelling way. You will also play a key role in fostering a culture of learning within the unit through coaching, sharing experience, and constructively challenging thinking.

The Department is committed to equal opportunities for all New Zealanders and promotes diversity in the work force as well as supporting flexible working.

Our vacancies are across the four teams within the policy unit and the varied work and roles includes:

  • Working across the natural resource sector to build support for policy we are leading and influence the direction of policy cross the sector
  • Advising on the strategic approach to safeguarding New Zealand's indigenous biodiversity and developing a National Policy Statement under the RMA on indigenous biodiversity
  • aProviding advice on, and influencing, the outcomes DOC is seeking through the management of visitors and use of public conservation land and waters.
