There are three North Island roles and two South Island roles.

The preferred locations are Hamilton, Whangarei, Wellington, Hokitika or Invercargill but some flexibility around other locations (such as Rotorua, Auckland, Nelson, Christchurch or Dunedin) may be considered.

The Department of Conservation (DOC) received a significant funding boost in 2018 of $181.6 million over four years.   This is one of the biggest funding increases that DOC has ever received, and it will benefit New Zealand's native plants, wildlife and natural landscapes.  $76 million of this funding is for biodiversity initiatives across land, freshwater and marine ecosystems, which means that DOC's Biodiversity Group is expanding in order to deliver its ambitious new work programme.

 

Within the Terrestrial Science Unit four new Technical Advisor roles have been created and an additional vacancy has occurred as a result of a promotion.  These are excellent opportunities for experienced conservationists to work on some of the more complex and challenging conservation issues facing New Zealand.  The overarching focus of all the roles is to lead the science and technical advice on the protection and recovery of terrestrial threatened species and ecosystems.   

 

All the roles will be fast-paced, often reactive and will require extensive engagement with internal stakeholders. Candidates must be strong influencers, negotiators, communicators and collaborators, be confident presenters and have an aptitude for mentoring and training others. 

 

Two of the roles (one in the North Island and one in the South) have a focus on providing advice and expertise in a statutory context such as the Environment Court and RMA proceedings.   They will focus on working collaboratively within DOC and with other agencies to provide expert advice on RMA and other statutory processes. 

 

These roles require candidates with a minimum of post-grad qualifications in terrestrial science, ecology, biodiversity, environmental science or conservation and a minimum of 5 years relevant work experience. Experience of providing advice in a statutory context is desirable and any technical expertise in bats and herpetofauna, although not essential, would be highly valued in these roles.

Another three roles (two in the North Island and one in the South) have a focus on providing local ecosystems and species advice.   They will support the extension in ecosystem-focussed management and the integration of threatened species management where it overlaps with ecosystem management. A key aspect will be acting as a conduit between the science teams and frontline Operations teams. 

 

These roles require candidates with a minimum of a BSc qualification in terrestrial science, ecology, biodiversity, environmental science or conservation and a minimum of 3 years relevant work experience. For the South Island role it would be advantageous to bring technical experience in dryland, plant ecology and/or braided rivers. For the North Island roles plant ecology experience would be an advantage.
