He angitūtanga | About the role
Are you someone who is passionate about historic sites and conserving our natural environment for generations to come? We currently have a vacancy for a Ranger in our team based in Geraldine, where you will be able to work outdoors to preserve our beautiful Aotearoa.
The Recreation portfolio ranges from maintaining backcountry huts within the Hakatere and Te Kahui Kaupeka Conservation Parks to the popular Mt Somers track and the Te Araroa trail.
We maintain six campsites, located between the Hunter hills in the south to Peel Forest north of Geraldine. These campsites are maintained with a ride on lawn mower and scrub bar. Bathrooms are also cleaned on a regular maintenance schedule.
The historic element of this role includes maintaining our historic sites within the region. Examples include the historic Mt Harper ice rink in the Rangitata valley, Monavale school and the historic Hakatere stone cottage.
The position will be focussed on:
- maintaining six campsites, historic sites, huts, and tracks to a high standard
- providing advice and information on the area to visitors
- preparation, planting and maintenance of restoration sites
- management of facilities and amenities
- visitor hazard management systems
- safety for staff, visitors and volunteers
- partnership with iwi
- supporting our volunteers and community groups
- building collaborative relationships internally and externally for the purpose of achieving greater conservation outcomes.

We are keen to hear from you if you have the following attributes:
- a full, clean driver license and experience with trailers
- strong tramping/outdoor background and be physically fit
- strong hands-on practical skills
- confident interacting with people from all walks of life
- an active interest in outdoor pursuits and conservation
- works co-operatively and collaboratively as a member of a team to accomplish goals and resolve problems
Desirable:
- a good understanding of technology is an important part of this role as our work is managed through a phone application
- demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Tikanga Māori and Te Ao Māori is an advantage
- current First Aid Certificate.

The Geraldine/Oamaru team consists of 25 permanent staff that are assisted by several temporary staff over the summer months. The staff body is a positive mix of people that draws on the strengths of the team to help deliver its work, being a staff member that can add value to this culture is a must. The salary range for this position is $54,314 to $69,401 with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.
