He angitūtanga | About the role

As our Operations Manager (Pou Matarautaki) for Greymouth, you will be responsible for leading a close-knit and passionate operations team ensuring effective integrated delivery of high-quality conservation outcomes.  You will have strength in operating discipline to ensure the region thrives.  The work programme across the motu is diverse and ambitious, so your ability to foster and continuously enhance team wellbeing and culture through strong engagement, empowerment, guidance, and ongoing development is critical.

 

Whakawhanaungatanga will be a guiding principle throughout this mahi and will enable you to foster, enhance and develop new relationships both with treaty partners, community stakeholders and the wider Greymouth and Western South Island communities.  You will be the operational face of the Department in the Greymouth community. 

 

The district is responsible for the management of a range of exciting and complex projects and sites including the Paparoa Track Great Walk; the Tohu Whenua sites of Brunner and Waiuta; Victoria Conservation Park and the Lewis Pass National Reserve and Te Maruia; the Reefton Gold Fields Heritage Area and mining operations across the Greymouth District.

 

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience

You will be an experienced people leader who is skilled at inspiring, motivating, and directing teams who will shape a culture that values continuous improvement.  There are multiple stakeholders both internally and externally which brings large relationship management component to this role, so strong communication skills are essential to ensure engagement and effective relationships.  Ideally you will have experience working alongside whānau, hapū, iwi as well as with the community, other agencies, and business groups.  Experience in conservation management is desirable but not essential

 

In addition, you will have:

  • Understanding and knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, its principles and implications on society and conservation
  • Strong health and safety focus to enable a positive safety culture and consistent safety practice
  • A collaborative and inclusive work style with both internal and external stakeholders and experience partnering with whānau, hapū and iwi to achieve mutual aspirations
  • A level of political astuteness is required coupled with the ability to identify and manage risk in uncertain situations

 

Desirable knowledge/experience:

  • Knowledge and experience working with businesses, Government Departments and Local Authorities.
  • Experience with establishing, working, and developing strong collaborative relationships with Māori community networks in the Greymouth region, including whānau, hapū and iwi and wider communities
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Tikanga Māori and Te Ao Māori
