The Department is blessed with more than 72,000 recreation, historic and infrastructure assets with a replacement value of over a billion dollars – everything from huts and other buildings, signage and interpretation, roads, tracks and walkways, bridges and structures, to campgrounds and toilets!

We have a vacancy for a Strategic Projects Manager to lead two projects in the Operations Group reporting to the Programme Manager of Strategic Projects.

The Pouakai Crossing is a joint vision for Taranaki to develop a world-class tourist attraction to boost economic development in the region. The Pouakai Crossing project involves improvement and realignment of existing tramping tracks on the northern slopes of Egmont National Park, to offer a high quality one-day visitor experience similar to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.  Once complete, the walk will be considered one of the best day walks in New Zealand and will contribute to part of the larger Taranaki Crossing.

Raoul Island is part of the Kermadec Islands group, situated approximately 1,100km north-east of the North Island. Raoul Island is unique as New Zealand's only sub-tropical ecosystem. The Department maintains a small presence on the island, which is resupplied by ship using a derrick crane and foxway system. The Raoul Foxway and Derrick project will lead replacement of this equipment, which is approaching the end of its life.

This newly established position is responsible for leading key project management functions including:

  • Deliver the project to agreed scope, time, budget, and quality standards
  • Provide regular and timely project reports and status to Governance members
  • Prepare the hand over to business as usual (including follow on actions).
  • Prepare the final project report.

We are looking for a capable Strategic Projects Manager with existing experience relevant to project management including the following elements:

  • The ideal candidate will be able to work positively and productively with stakeholders, colleagues and team members across a varied level of seniority.
  • You should be able to demonstrate a track record for delivering projects that meet the desired benefits being sought by governance.
  • Experience in project management within the context of infrastructure or track construction is preferred.
  • Due to the nature of the Raoul Foxway and Derrick project at its core being an engineering solution, applicants with an engineering qualification are desirable.

Please apply online.  Applications must include a cover letter, CV and evidence of the required capabilities as per the project description.
