The Rakiura/Stewart Island Office is looking for a capable and diligent Ranger to support the delivery of up to four Battle For Our Birds operations including possum control and predator control to protect the critically endangered southern New Zealand dotterel. This is a fixed term position from September 2017 until February 2018.

This position is ideal for those who enjoy supporting operational planning, logistics and managing delivery of biodiversity projects by field teams and/or third-party contractors. You will be working closely with the Senior Ranger, Biodiversity as part of the dedicated Rakiura Operations Team delivering quality conservation in a unique and beautiful landscape.

Your role will contribute to preserving our natural heritage including ecosystems with significant conservation value and threatened animal populations.

Your role will focus on up to four temporary projects and include the following tasks:

• Supporting the planning of operational detail
• Supporting public, stakeholder and iwi consultation.
• Supporting contract sourcing, management and evaluation
• Leading the management and tasking of a small field-based team
• Supporting liaison with interested parties and supporting agencies

The ideal applicant will have:

• A strong work ethic, good attention to detail and an enthusiasm for business process and office work
• A keen interest in biodiversity conservation
• The ability to provide leadership to a small, focussed team
• Knowledge of predator and pest animal control techniques
• Experience in contract management
• Good computer skills including the use of Microsoft Office
• Excellent written communication skills
• The ability to work well alone as well as part of a team
