This is a fixed term role for six (6) months.


Are you someone who loves the outdoors, has lots of practical skills and enjoys working with people?  If yes, then this is the job for you.


We have a vacancy for a 7-month Ranger on Stewart Island /Rakiura October 2018 to April 2019.


Your role includes:

  • Work planning and reporting.
  • Logistical support for the hut ranger team
  • Induction, training and support for staff and volunteers
  • Providing information and support to visitors
  • Hut and track maintenance within the Rakiura National Park
  • Visitor Safety/ meet Health and Safety requirements and reporting 
  • Some pest control work
  • Building and Structure maintenance


We are looking for a responsible and reliable team leader, who is not afraid of hard work, and who can demonstrate or learn the following:

  • A high level of Interpersonal skills, including the ability to work individually and in a team with the willingness and capacity to interact, liaise and consult with a variety of people
  • Have an ability to live and work in an isolated situation.  To work effectively without supervision on a wide variety of tasks, and be able to problem solve and work through issues in isolation when necessary
  • Be able to communicate effectively both and be familiar with and confident in the
    use of VHF radio systems
  • Have a practical background with the ability, skills and physical fitness to be able to carry out routine maintenance and building/plant repairs, track construction and maintenance
  • Currently driver licence would be an advantage
  • Building skills would be an advantage



Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory, including a valid work visa covering the whole period of employment if applying internationally.
