We have two ranger vacancies for mountaineering and recreation professionals with an interest in alpine rescue to join our team in Aoraki/Mt. Cook National Park.


This position is a permanent position subject to performance conditions.  There will be a performance review at the end of each season to ensure competency is being maintained to the requirements of the SAR competency system. This competency needs to be achieved to maintain your employment. This is a unique work environment and requires a high level of fitness and capability to be maintained.  The yearly assessment is required due to the high-risk nature of SAR work and the need to ensure competency is achieved and maintained to address health and safety requirements.


How-ever a significant part of the role will be leading and assisting in the delivery of the recreation programme, including:

  • Facilities maintenance and site restoration
  • Visitor, huts and historic asset management
  • Duty officer roster 24/7
  • Daily management of the team work programme.
  • Be a member of the Aoraki FENZ Fire brigade
  • Delivering assigned search & rescue training


As a Department of Conservation Ranger, based in Aoraki/Mt. Cook National Park, you will be involved in leadership or supporting leadership of one of the two four-person teams responsible for undertaking search and rescue operations on a rostered basis. 


We are looking for responsible and reliable team players, who are not afraid of hard work, and who have the following skills:

  • Personal foundation skills – climbing competency to a high skill level with demonstrated experience and currency.  Attestation based on current climbing logbook and verification
  • Alpine terrain skills must include:
    • NZMSC Avalanche 1 (or equivalent)
    • Capable of alpine grade 3 (minimum)
    • Capable of rock grade 16 on traditional gear (minimum)
    • Pre-Hospital Emergency care (or equivalent) qualification
  • Good communication skills and an ability to get on with people
  • Valid Driver's Licence
  • Experience in carpentry or facilities maintenance
  • Experience and/or qualifications in working with chainsaws, 4WD vehicles and other field-based equipment


Desirable qualifications include:

  • Rescue and /or guiding qualifications – e.g. NZMGA
  • Advanced First Aid/medical qualifications
  • NZMSC Avalanche 2 (or equivalent)
