We have a seasonal vacancy for an enthusiastic Ranger to join our Visitor Centre Team in Christchurch from November 2017- March 2018. This is a fixed term/part-time position averaging 25 hours per week working a roster of Tuesday – Saturday. This includes weekend work and public holiday work.

 

DOC's Visitor centres are the gateway to the conservation estate, providing visitors with information and access to experiences to a last a lifetime. We aim to make the great outdoors the ultimate experience for every visitor.

 

You will be part of a great team focused on delivering excellent customer service for all domestic and international visitors.

 

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing visitors with up to date information about recreational opportunities locally and throughout the country, local conservation projects, current and forecast weather, conditions of tracks and huts, and transport available locally.
  • Promotion and selling national and local conservation and recreation opportunities, including concessionaires, DOC and other related operators.
  • Promoting and selling conservation merchandise and the core range of products within our Visitor Centre.
  • Ensure branding opportunities are maximised and national campaigns are promoted e.g. Predator Free 2050.

 

The ideal applicant will have: 

  • An understanding of recreation and tourism opportunities throughout New Zealand and knowledge of conservation or recreational activities within Christchurch and Canterbury.
  • Experience/ demonstrated competence in customer service, computer skills, sales and retail.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to maintain high standards while working under pressure.
  • An enthusiasm and active in outdoor pursuits and conservation
  • Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory, including a valid work visa covering the whole period of employment if applying internationally.
