Are you someone who is driven to conserve New Zealand's special flora and fauna?  Are you skilled in business and nursery management, leadership, managing relationships, sales, staff and IT systems; and are you innovative, and willing to take on new challenges? 


The nursery at Motukarara plays an important role helping to restore Canterbury's native plant biodiversity.  The focus of this role is to build on the nursery's recent success.  This role has overall responsibility for managing the nursery, meeting production and sales targets, managing budgets and a great team of dedicated staff.  Quality eco-sourcing of plants is the nursery's strength and managing relationships with significant customers is pivotal. 


The successful applicant will have nursery and/or business and conservation experience and will be able to continue with the recent innovations in the nursery and to its product lines - a must for this business minded, conservation position.


The successful applicant will have:


  • Proven leadership abilities, nursery and business skills, be innovative, systematic and able to manage staff.  You must be physically fit, have a can-do attitude and is someone who wants to get things done
  • Strategic analysis and decision-making, great planning and leadership management skills
  • Commitment to excellence - sets high personal and professional standards; assumes responsibility and accountability for the success of this business unit
  • 4-5 years extensive experience in practical nursery business management and in conservation programmes including knowledge of native plants and restoration.  At least a tertiary qualification or equivalent experience and achievements in business or natural heritage management
  • Building and sustaining collaborative relationships - identifies, develops and sustains effective, productive, collaborative and outcome oriented relationships (internal and external to the organization) to achieve business and conservation goals
  • Initiative - develops new, innovative yet practical ideas, rethinking how to approach the business. Takes action to achieve results beyond what is normally called for
  • High level of ability to use IT systems, sales and stock management systems.  A full drivers licence is a must have, grow safe and chemical handlers certificates and a current first aid certificate would be an advantage


This position is for a Nursery Manager but is classified as Senior Ranger/Supervisor, Biodiversity as per the Role Description.
