Are you someone who loves the outdoors, has lots of practical skills and enjoys working with people? If yes, then this is the job for you.

As a Ranger you will be joining our talented field operation teams carrying out critical conservation work across the North Canterbury region.

This position is based in Hanmer Springs as part of the Operations team and reports to the Recreation/Historic Supervisor at the Rangiora Office. 

This role is predominantly working in the maintenance of visitor and historic assets (walking tracks, structures, backcountry huts, amenity sites, campsites, roads and picnic areas), in North Canterbury and adjoining public conservation land with some biodiversity work at times.

The operation requires the requisite driving qualifications to operate machinery. You must be someone with lots of practical and back country skills that likes the challenge of keeping things running smoothly along with a sound working knowledge of small plant, construction and building maintenance. A good working knowledge of computers and technology is vital in this role.

The work is predominantly looking after the back-country Assets around Hanmer Springs, Lewis Pass, St James and lake Sumner Conservation area, sometimes involving camping out for up to five to ten days at a time in the back country in huts or tents and requires a high level of fitness. The position also involves contributing to emergency work including rural fire periodically. At times, you may be required to assist on tasks throughout the wider district and region.

Your skills and experience must include a broad range of practical skills, the ability to work with and supervise others on the ground when required; teaching, supporting and overseeing rangers, contractors, community groups and volunteers doing conservation work.

The successful applicant will ideally have:

• An appreciation for outdoor recreation and its importance to our environment, society and economy.
• Hold a Full Class 1,2 with endorsements Wheels, Tracks.
• Excellent interpersonal, relationship and communication skills.
• Excellent computer/technology skills, GPS, Smartphones, Data loggers
• Current Outdoor First Aid certificate.
• Grow Safe Certificate in weed spraying.
• Experience and/or qualifications in working with chainsaws, light utility vehicles, motorbikes, 4WD vehicles on/off road, lawn mowers, ride on mowers, weed eaters, helicopter work, cleaning, painting and other field based machinery and workshop equipment
• Defensive driving certificate is desirable
• TC, traffic control unit standard is desirable
• Trade qualification or three years' experience in asset maintenance preferred.
• Good sound knowledge and experience in Health and safety at the work place.
