Weedbusters is a weeds awareness and education programme that aims to protect New Zealand's environment from the increasing weed problem. Pest animals and plants (weeds) are the greatest threat to New Zealand's biodiversity. We are seeking an enthusiastic and resourceful individual who can work well unsupervised to join our South Westland team for a fixed term period of 24 months.

A key priority of this role is to liaise with land owners and occupiers to convey information about DOC's key weed control priorities. You will also be required to encourage and at times facilitate the control and/or removal of key weed species from private land and other land not managed by DOC. Small scale weed control and site replanting will be needed and you may at times be required to supervise other staff and volunteers.

To be successful in this role you will have:

• a sound knowledge of New Zealand's native and introduced flora
• a good understanding of weed impacts and appropriate control techniques for a range of species
• an understanding of the relevance of related legislation, particularly the Biosecurity Act 1993
• experience in consulting and negotiating and the ability to gain ‘buy in' from unreceptive people
• basic computer and GPS skills
• a valid driver license
• an ability to develop and implement a work plan.

A current Growsafe and approved handler for agrichemicals certificate as well as a current first aid certificate and local knowledge is essential. A good level of fitness is necessary and work will sometimes be outside of normal working hours and may include overnight trips.

You will be expected to be part of and promote a culture where health and safety are seen as integral to successfully achieving our work and to take on responsibilities for organising materials and equipment for programmed work.

Please apply online. Applications must include a cover letter, CV and evidence of the required capabilities as per the project description.
