This is a fixed term position initially for 18 months with the possibility of extension up to 36 months.


Do you have strong practical skills and are comfortable being self-reliant on a remote island in the Cook Strait?


We are looking for someone who is passionate about the conservation of New Zealand's natural and cultural values, skilled at field delivery of a wide range of tasks including infrastructure and machinery maintenance.


Due to the remote location of the island and nature of the work at least two people will need to be resident on the island for the majority of the fixed term period. This will be through a job share or accompanied position arrangement.


The position is based on Takapourewa and involves a large variety of work, from maintenance of infrastructure, weed control, track clearing, minor plant propagation to managing visitors. This remote and isolated location has good accommodation, its own power system and satellite broadband. Proven experience living in isolation is necessary. Relevant mechanical and building skills and experience is important


Required Experience:

  • High personal commitment to Health and Safety
  • Interest and experience in cultural engagement
  • Proven ability to operate in a remote location for extended periods of time
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Strong planning, organisational skills and attention to detail
  • Practical experience and interest in biodiversity work
  • A current First Aid certificate
  • Experience working in the building trade or similar
  • Experience maintaining small plant machinery items


Desired Experience:

  • Experience working with LUV's
  • A current Grow Safe certificate


Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory, including a valid work permit covering the whole period of employment if applying internationally.


Due to the nature of the role, you may be required to complete a pre-employment health questionnaire and undertake a medical examination.
