The Dama Wallaby Management Project is looking for a Project Coordinator to lead and co-ordinate the implementation of the Dama Wallaby Management Plan. The Department of Conservation is employing this role on behalf of the Dama Wallaby Management Project. The role will be primarily based out of the Department's Rotorua Office, but at times will work out of the Bay of Plenty Regional Council Rotorua office, and the Waikato Regional Council's Hamilton office.

The Department of Conservation, with Bay of Plenty and Waikato Regional Councils', have the ambitious vision of eventually eradicating dama wallabies from the Bay of Plenty and Waikato regions.   A dama wallaby management plan has been prepared by the three agencies to guide work towards achieving this vision. The Plan initially aims to contain and then progressively reduce the wallaby distribution in the central North Island.  The agencies have agreed to ‘pool' their respective resources and work together to improve the delivery of operational work. This role is pivotal to delivering the Plan and maximising value from available resources.

The successful applicant will have a minimum of 7 years experience in biodiversity and/or biosecurity management and require the following skills;

  • Sound project management experience
  • Experience working in multi partner projects, including experience working with tangata whenua
  • Good knowledge of contract management
  • Comprehensive people management skills
  • A proven stakeholder manager
  • Good communication skills
  • Analysis and problem solving
  • An affinity with the Bay of Plenty/Waikato and established networks within the community and resource management organisations will also be particularly valuable.

We are initially recruiting on a three-year fixed term basis, after which the work and function of the role will be reviewed to decide on the future make up of the position.

This is an exciting position. Some travel within New Zealand, and the ability to work flexible hours at times, will be required.

If you want to join the Dama Wallaby Management Project team, and make a real difference, we'd love to hear from you.

Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory, including a valid work visa covering the whole period of employment if applying internationally.

Please apply online.  Applications must include a cover letter, CV and evidence of the required capabilities as per the project description.
