It's hard to imagine a more interesting job than leading the Department of Conservation's Operations in the Whangarei District.  DOC Whangarei is charged with managing a large variety of amazing public conservation land and marine reserves including the Kermadec Islands, Bream Head, Mimiwhangata Coastal Park, the Poor Knights Islands and Marine Reserve, and the Tangihua Forest.

The Operations Manager's focus is to lead the high performing Operations team to deliver high quality conservation outcomes.  The work of the team includes pest control and biodiversity programmes, the maintenance of popular camping grounds and public walking tracks, working alongside our Treaty Partners and community groups, and ensuring we perform to statutory requirements.

As well as strong practical conservation management skills, this role requires a great people leader.  We need someone who is skilled at inspiring, motivating and directing teams and who can shape a culture which values team work, continuous improvement, partnerships with iwi and working with the Whangarei community.

The ability to build strong collaborative relationships internally and externally is vital to the job, to achieve goals and build on conservation efforts in the District.  In many areas, iwi and community groups are leading conservation work, accomplishing far more than the Department could do alone.  These relationships need to be fostered and supported by the Operations Manager.

The Operations Manager also provides specialist knowledge and support on local conservation activities to the Director, Operations Northern North Island, and DOC nationally.

Health and Safety of staff and visitors to conservation sites is of utmost importance to DOC, and this role is charged with creating a strong safety-first environment, ensuring there is a positive safety culture and consistent safety practice across all work sites.

Please apply online. Applications must include a cover letter, CV and evidence of the required capabilities as per the role description.
