The Sounds District is seeking an experienced, motivated and capable people leader to join to lead, support and develop our Islands Biodiversity Team in this permanent, full time role based in Picton.

He angitūtanga: About the Role

Now we have your attention let's talk about the role. Reporting to the Operations Manager, you will lead our small team of rangers on our staffed islands, Te Pākeka/ Maud and Takapourewa/ Stephens and be responsible for planning, organising and implementing the delivery of biodiversity programmes. The programmes involve protecting native wildlife, habitats and plants right through to controlling weeds, track, infrastructure maintenance and the islands ongoing biosecurity and surveillance. In this role, you will partner with tangata whenua especially with Takapourewa where island co-management exists. You will lead two hunters that are deployed across two Districts. You will also be responsible for leading the District's island quarantine programme which is an essential part of offering protection to all the Districts islands unique ecosystems.

Although the role is expected to be somewhat field based, you will be mostly office based. There will also be capacity to be involved with field work delivery both on the islands and with other field projects within the District.

 

Ngā He kōrero mōu: What we are looking for

We are seeking a natural people leader who is passionate about leading by example and being part of a positive team culture. You could be an experienced people leader wanting a change in your environment, looking for better work life balance where you can bring your transferrable skills to conservation. We are to hear from you if you have the following:

  • Demonstrated leader/supervisor skills and the ability to inspire, motivate and coach a passionate team.
  • Previous experience in biodiversity including knowledge of native flora and fauna and pest control.
  • Strong field planning and coordinating skills, including the ability to prioritise your own work and that of the delivery team.
  • Computer savvy, agile and quick learner.
  • Strong health, safety and wellbeing focus.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.
  • A high level of fitness with remote area/ backcountry experience.
  • A genuine interest in the Departments management of our natural and cultural heritage, and an enthusiasm for engaging others in conservation.
  • Organised, self-motivated, resilient and a can-do attitude.
  • Full NZ drivers licence.

 

Desirable skills and experience:

  • Previous experience engaging and working in partnership with iwi and tangata whenua, as well as an understanding of the implications of te Tiriti o te Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) on today's society and conservation.
  • Demonstrated experience of achieving successful outcomes across a geographically dispersed team.
  • Knowledge or experience in field conservation management would be advantageous.
  • Knowledge or experience in leading the maintenance of a range of buildings and other infrastructure.
  • Boating/skippering qualifications are desirable.
  • Knowledge of the Sounds District.

Salary Range $72,610 to $92,780. Starting salary of the successful candidate will be based on their relevant skills and experience.
