He angitūtanga | About the role

The Timber Trail is 84kms of fantastic Grade 3 riding encompassing a rich fabric of conservation, biodiversity, geology and cultural history and stories.  Our role is to ensure that the trail experience on the ground delivers to the standards and expectations of over 20,000 trampers and riders each year.

As the Ranger/Project Lead you will be working with the great team within DOC partnering with Iwi and our supporting teams including the Timber Trail Champion, operators and local volunteer groups.  The Timber Trail connects kiwis and other visitors to our special place that is Pureora.  A love of Pureora, off road cycling and connecting with our long term strategy will make this an amazing opportunity for you to flourish.

Responsibilities include:

  • Daily supervision of staff, contractors and volunteers,
  • Working alongside the Senior Ranger and Supervisor with weekly work planning,
  • Ensuring a strong focus on the health, safety and wellbeing of staff, contractors and visitors is present in planning and monitoring the work,
  • Facilities maintenance and site restoration across an extensive network of Department owned assets.
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills, and proven ability to deliver successfully in collaboration with tangata whenua and a range of partners.

You will be required at times to stay away overnight and work outside normal hours.

You will be a team player with great communication and organisation skills and the proven supervision experience to work alongside Te Papa Atawhai staff, our community, iwi and stakeholders. 

You will have.

  • Great people management and proven supervisory skills or experience in leading a team
  • Experience in recreational and historic land management or asset management
  • A strong knowledge base in conservation
  • Excellent planning and organisational skills
  • Proficiency in computer use, data entry and analysis
  • A strong commitment to safety and wellbeing in the workplace
  • Physical fitness and an ability to work outdoors in a range of conditions 
  • A tertiary qualification in a relevant field is desirable but not essential
