He angitūtanga | About the Role
One of our organisational goals is to become an Honourable Treaty Partner, we are seeking a Pou Tairangahau to help us achieve this goal. We envision this role as providing strategic Māori advice and direction and will take the lead on supporting our Kaihautū Matarautaki / Operations Director for the Hauraki/Waikato/Taranaki region and working alongside our Treaty Partnerships / Relationships Group, the successful candidate will be responsible for supporting us all to build strong meaningful relationships, in partnership with our whānau, hapū and iwi, to deliver on our conservation goals and to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
This is a role that calls on your knowledge and experience of Tikanga Māori and Te Ao Māori, commitment and passion for Te Taiao, and ability to work strategically and collaboratively
This is a significant strategic role where our Pou Tairangahau leads our region's approach with whānau, hapū and iwi.
This role will focus on:
- Supporting Kaihautū Matarautaki to build and implement a strategic approach for stronger relationships with whānau, hapū and iwi.
- Provide leadership in the development and delivery of the HWT business plan.
- Lead our approach to building cultural capability of the region's staff and provide support, coaching and mentoring to the Kaihautū Matarautaki and senior staff.
- Provide regional leadership on the implementation of treaty settlements at place, in support of accountable managers.
- Identify, support or lead opportunities to work with whānau, hapū and iwi.
- Work on national priorities, systems, policies, and strategies where required by the Treaty Partnerships/ Relationships Group.
The preference for this role is to be based in Hamilton, although does have the flexibility to work from one of the offices in the region. Travel will be required across the region; you will be one of two Pou in the region and collaboration will be required. This role is a full time, permanent position.
He kōrero mōu | What we are looking for
You will be fluent in Te Reo Māori me ōna tikanga and have a strong knowledge of tikanga Māori, kaitiakitanga, wairuatanga, manaakitanga and iwi/hapūtanga. Proven relationship management experience is needed to assist you to comfortably engage and work in partnership with iwi and tangata whenua.
In addition, you will:
- Be confident in and respected for your Te Ao Māori expertise.
- Be a confident mentor and coach, with demonstrated coaching experience previously.
- Have strong written & oral communication skills.
- Show strong understanding and knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, its principles and implications on society and conservation.
- Have knowledge and experience working with business, Government Departments and Local Authorities is desirable.
It is also desirable to have an existing relationship to or understanding of the iwi landscape of these regions.

We expect to appoint someone in the salary range of $91,200 - $120,000, with the final salary dependant on the successful candidate's experience.
