He angitūtanga: About the Role
Reporting to the Deputy Director General, Organisational Support, you will lead the strategic direction of the Finance Unit and ensure sound financial management throughout the Department. As the Chief Financial Officer, you will ensure the viability of the Department through strategic financial management by understanding cost pressures and then planning, measuring, reporting and delivering our year-to-year business and financial interests.
The Chief Financial Officer is a trusted advisor to the Director-General and Senior Leadership Team on financial management, financial controls and financial sustainability. You will provide financial advice and assurance, in conjunction with the Enterprise Portfolio Management Office (EPMO) and Asset Management Unit, on the Department's investments to improve the financial sustainability of DOC's asset portfolio.
Leading with influence across the Department, you will collaborate with peers to manage interdependencies and be committed to making DOC a great place to work for our broader finance team. You will be visible, open, and engaging, and bring energy to the role while representing DOC credibly in respect of financial management to the Minister, Treasury, Audit New Zealand, and Cabinet committees.
The Chief Financial Officer will have functional responsibility for five direct reports across five business functions (around 50 FTE).
He kōrero mōu: What we are looking for
The preferred candidate will be someone who brings a blend of commercial and financial acumen, underpinned by knowledge of government financial processes and the Public Finance Act.
You will be a qualified finance leader (CA or equivalent) who has a proven ability to lead with influence and present financial information clearly and concisely across a range of audiences. You will have experience working with SAP and know what good processes look like to ensure we maximize our newly implemented finance system.

- Set clear management team objectives and expectations, supports, and reinforces high performance
- Builds relationships and gain support and participation of key Treaty Partner individuals and groups
- Analyse and integrate wide ranging information to support effective decision making
- Influence and provide frank advice on sensitive issues
- Deal with difficult issues and disagreement using honesty and joint problem solving rather than positional power
