Ranger (Kaki Captive Facility) (Fixed Term)

Mō te tūranga | About the role

You will support the peak period of egg production, chick rearing, and other seasonal tasks critical to the success of the kakī recovery programme, working alongside experienced staff to carry out captive management duties, assist with the annual release of juvenile birds to the wild, and ensure daily operations run smoothly.

The position will be focussed on:

  • All things related to kakī husbandry. Including incubation, chick rearing, and record keeping, and meticulous cleaning
  • supporting the lead aviculturist in all captive facility operations
  • carrying out pest control and fence checks, as needed.

The successful applicant will work a rostered five-day week from Thursday to Monday, with Tuesday and Wednesday as their weekend days. Flexibility is essential, as additional hours may be required at times.

As the captive facility operates seven days a week, you will also be expected to work on public holidays, especially over the Christmas and New Year period.

DOC rental accommodation is available at a reasonable cost for the successful applicant.

If you have some of following, we are keen to hear from you:

  • experience in the captive management of kakī /black stilt, or other endangered species
  • a full valid driver licence
  • a current first aid certificate
  • strong observational and animal behaviour interpretation skills
  • the ability to follow direction and work independently
  • a collaborative mindset and the ability to work in a small, diverse team
  • good communication skills and the ability to adapt to changing priorities
  • ability to work rostered shifts, including weekends, early starts, and public holidays

The salary range for this position is $58,816 - $66,578 with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.

You must seek the support of your line manager (minimum Tier 4) in writing before applying for a secondment opportunity and attach it to your application. Please note, appointment will be made within the B Band salary range only. 

Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory – this includes holding a valid work visa that covers the whole period of employment.
