He angitūtanga | About the role
Are you an experienced leader passionate about training excellence and developing team capabilities? We are looking for a credible and experienced leader to oversee the delivery of core conservation skills training and drive capability-building initiatives across DOC.
In this role, you will lead a dispersed team of professionals, ensure high-quality training delivery, and foster a collaborative, results-driven environment. The position will be focussed on:
- Leading a dedicated and skilled team to ensure effective learning delivery across the organisation.
- Building and maintaining strong relationships with key stakeholders, including senior leaders and geographically dispersed teams, to drive consistent training uptake.
- Stewardship and management of a range of foundational and core learning programmes across DOC.
- Managing the systems and processes used to deliver learning – including people systems, delivery resourcing, learning communication channels, and technology systems (LMS etc) Supporting the team to design plan, , and execute training events, ensuring effective resource allocation and smooth program flow.
- Ensuring training accessibility and engagement for a geographically diverse workforce.
- Overseeing team performance management, coaching, and development for continuous growth.
- Engaging with Māori partners and incorporating co-design processes where appropriate.
- Engage with a diverse range of stakeholders within the business and external training partners to ensure high quality learning delivery.
- Evaluating and reporting on programme results on a regular schedule

Our ideal candidate will have proven leadership experience and a strong background in program delivery and training, combined with a practical, hands-on approach to learning. Whether you come from an operational background with field skills and training experience, or a project management background with expertise in planning, executing, and allocating resources for training events, we'd love to hear from you.
Experience in setting up training programs, managing their flow, and ensuring smooth delivery to meet objectives will be key to your success in this role.
In addition, you will bring;
- Expertise in mentoring, coaching, and developing a team.
- A strong service design and delivery mindset – ensuring engagement in learning experiences is simple, accessible and consistent.
- Business partnering and advisory skills, with experience engaging diverse stakeholders.
- Commitment to fostering an inclusive, collaborative, high-performance team culture.
- Familiarity with Māori perspectives and experience engaging with iwi and Māori communities.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and deliver results on time and within budget.
- Experience rolling out training programs, particularly in operational or field environments, and managing stakeholder relationships to ensure uptake.
- Comfort with modern systems, including a Learning Management System (LMS), and adaptability to new technologies.
- Practical and agile mindset, able to navigate challenges of a large, geographically dispersed workforce and deliver results efficiently.

The salary range for this position is $108,617 - 137,645 with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.
Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory – this includes holding a valid work visa that covers the whole period of employment.
