Department of Conservation Te Papa Atawhai (DOC) serves to protect and sustain nature across Aotearoa. We put nature and people at the heart of our mahi, guided by te reo Māori, te ao Māori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi. We do this by: 

• protecting land, species, ecosystems, and cultural heritage for conservation purposes,

Due to the evolving and complex nature of procurement, we have recently transitioned to a centralised, category led operating model to provide more strategic and best practise service to the business. This new model will enable DOC to deliver on its key strategic focus areas such as strengthening our Treaty partnerships and providing strong support for our frontline staff. We are open to considering candidates in Wellington, Christchurch or Auckland locations.

This is an exciting time to consider joining an organisation such as DOC. You'll work collaboratively with the wider procurement function to educate and embed this new way of working to the business. This will result in strong strategic & commercial partnerships with our suppliers, cost saving opportunities and continuous improvement initiatives.

He angitūtanga | About the role

Reporting to the Director Business Services (Wellington based), you will immediately come into the role supporting the implementation of the Category-led model by leading the team through the transition and overseeing the change to our Operating Model. You'll oversee the procurement function of approx. 18 staff (6 direct reports) located nationally. You'll lead the Department's procurement function, creating and embedding new processes aligned to the wider strategic and commercial goals. Additionally, you'll;

• communicate a compelling vision of core purpose, aligning all sourcing activity to strategy and objectives,
• work with senior stakeholders across the business to influence and educate best practise processes,
• provide support and guidance to the wider procurement function as we transition to these new ways of working,
• develop and deliver a long term programme of work to assist with budget and resource planning,
• Support DOC to operate as an honourable Treaty Partner - identifying and facilitating opportunities to embed te ao Māori,
• Provide the Department with assurance on procurement engagements in our Grants, MOU and Sponsorships areas.

If you have the following attributes, we are keen to hear from you:

• extensive experience in a senior/ leadership position within a category led procurement function - exposure working with a Government Agency would be advantageous,
• growth mindset and big picture thinker, providing strategic and commercial input in process design and improvements,
• passionate about developing, mentoring, empowering and leading a team, particularly through change,
• considerable experience in cooperative, partnering relationships with key stakeholders or suppliers driving innovation, added value and benefit realisation,
• experience in developing category strategies, implementing and managing approaches to market,
• CIPS and/or tertiary qualification (Business, Law, Accounting, Commerce) or similar, preferred.
