Toitū te marae a Tāne, toitū te marae a Tangaroa, toitū te tangata

If the land is well and the sea is well, the people will thrive

At Te Papa Atawhai / Department of Conservation (DOC), we serve Aotearoa New Zealand by working to ensure Papatūānuku Thrives. Our spirit of public service is brought to life through our organisational strategy, Te Kaupapa a Te Papa Atawhai, which puts nature and people at the heart of everything we do. It is anchored by Te Ao Māori and te reo Māori, recognising that Te Tiriti o Waitangi and whānau, hapū and iwi are central to all our mahi.

He angitūtanga | About the role

The Operations Manager is a critical management role within the Department, leading the delivery of high-quality conservation outputs across Mohua/Golden Bay. The role is responsible for managing the District team based at Tākaka, to deliver integrated programmes of work to improve the status of biodiversity, provide visitors with quality recreation experiences, and connect people to conservation.

Relationships are key to the role. You will be part of a strong, collegial Regional Leadership Team in support of the Director Operations, as well as working collaboratively with treaty partners, community groups, local councils and other agencies.

The role requires being able to think and work strategically and constantly maintain the bigger picture as well as being able to focus on the delivery of work programmes to deliver outcomes.

He kōrero mōu | What we are looking for

We are looking for a great people leader who understands the value of team. Someone who can connect with people and communicate exceptionally well. You will get the best out of people, be good at managing and leading change, value and grow a good workplace culture, and understand the importance of processes and systems.

DOC takes a ‘one team' approach, and you will work with other teams across the organisation as we all endeavour to improve conservation outcomes. Being able to seek input and advice from others, being a positive and proactive decision maker, and having sound risk management skills lie at the heart of the role.

Our treaty partnership is very important to us. You will bring a respectful, future focused approach to working with whānau, hapū and iwi. We operate in a multi-stakeholder environment, and being able to understand and incorporate different values and perspectives, enabling external groups to undertake conservation, is critical.

We are looking for someone who loves what they do, can be part of the team, and wants to make a difference.

Mō mātou | About us

Te Papa Atawhai is committed to fostering a diverse workforce that represents the communities we serve, and to creating an inclusive workplace culture. Our Te Kaupapa behaviours of whakatīnanatia (we deliver), atawhaitia a Papatūānuku (we love nature), whakawhānaungatanga (we build relationships) and whakaauaha (we innovate) guide what we need to do for Papatūānuku to Thrive.

Ko ngā hua | What we offer

In this role you will be encouraged to lead, at times you will be challenged, and you'll find support and a collective sense of purpose with those that you work with. You will have the opportunity to develop and grow both within the role and within DOC.

You will visit and learn about special environments, work with people who really care about what they do, and come to know the people and communities within Mohua/Golden Bay.
